Dutchess County resident Javan McMillon, age 28, of Poughkeepsie, was convicted by a jury on Tuesday, Oct. 8, following two days of deliberations, said Dutchess County District Attorney Office Anthony Parisi.

The attack occurred on Saturday, March 9, on Bement Ave., in the city of Poughkeepsie, when McMillon repeatedly struck his girlfriend with a leather belt, causing substantial pain and bruising, the DA's office said.

Parisi said the lashing assault occurred in the presence of two minor children, aged 4 and 2.

After the assault, McMillon was in custody at the Dutchess County Justice and Transitions Center, where on numerous dates, he violated an order of protection by contacting the victim by phone, Parisi added.

“Today’s conviction is a powerful reminder that domestic violence has far-reaching impacts, especially when it occurs in front of children," Parisi said. "Our community will not stand by as families are torn apart by abuse, and we will hold accountable those who violate court orders meant to protect victims."

McMillion is scheduled to be sentenced in December, officials said. He faces up to 20 years in prison for the attack.
